One of the ways to hunt monkeys is to place a small portion of food in a sack whose opening is just wide enough for a monkey's fist to fit. When the monkey approaches the sack, puts its hand in it, and grabs food, the width of the sack's opening will prevent the monkey from pulling its hand back out. All the monkey needs to do is spread out its hand to get it out of the sack but because it will not let go of the food, the monkey just screams and is eventually captured by the hunter. By the same token, man must also know that if he is unwilling to let go of something small in his hand and thus insists on fulfilling his greed, he will face harm in the end. When we cast off foolish greed from our heart, we will be able to lead truly peaceful and prosperous lives with treasures God gives us.
"Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death" (James 1:15).
